Prosthetic and surgical complications in dental implantology

Abstract

Osseointegrated implants and supported-implanted prostheses have been used in the substitution of lost teeth. With the discovery of osseointegration the index of success in dental implantology has increased resulting in the development of some systems and brands of implants. However, all this evolution did not keep dental surgeons exempt from prosthetic and surgical complications. This study was designed with the objective of confirming the high number of complications that occur during treatment involving implants, as well as the appearance of constraints between professionals and patients, and the lack of information to patients about the occurence of these complications. The results showed that 100% of the samples had some complication during treatment. Out of the 1810 complications mentioned, the most common were swelling and ecchymosis (898). According to results, only 42% of the dentists used informed written document to inform the patient about the possible occurrence of complications. It was observed that 59 dental surgeons had some form of constraint with the patient and 13 (22,03%) dental surgeons had constraints related to the occurrence of prosthetic and surgical complications. It is necessary to inform the patients, before the treatment, about the occurrence of complications and to resolve them, avoiding legal suits.
