Purpose: The objective of this study was to compare the amount of trimming in mesial and buccal walls after cervical preparation using thirty mesial and buccal roots of extracted human upper molars. Methods: The specimens were divided into three groups (n = 10) according to the following rotary systems: Group 1: Gates-Glidden 1, 2 and Batt 012; Group 2 rotary system ProTaper SX and S1, and Group 3 rotary system Pré-RaCe 0.10/40 and 0.08/35. The teeth were embedded in self-curing resin using a polyethylene tube, and the crowns were sectioned approximately 0.5 mm below the enamel-dentin junction. The cervical portions were digitized by the image software ImageLab version 2.3 before and after the preparation of the cervical third to analyze the amount of trimming produced with the tested instruments. Results: The amount of trimming produced on cervical mesial and buccal walls followed the decreasing order: Group 1 > Group 3 > Group 2; G1 was statistically different from the other groups. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, we concluded that all instruments produced cervical trimming. The type of rotary instrument may have a significant influence on the amount of trimming on cervical walls. Key words: Cervical preparation; enlargement instruments; nickel-titaniumDownloads
