The influence of the halogenous light and the LED (light emitting diode) in the resistance of the union of brackets in the human tooth enamel
AbstractThe resin is one of the most used materials for orthodontic brackets retentions, and its polymerization occurs through luminous energy. The halogenous light is the most used luminous source, because it presents low cost and easy maintenance. However, the needed time for light curing of the materials is long and the life span of the light devices is relatively short. The light cure through LED (ligth emitting diode) is gaining more attention, because it presents a short light curing time of the composed resin and a long life span. This study had the objective to determine through in vitro testing the influence of the halogenous light and the LED in the resistance of the union of brackets to the human tooth enamel. As orthodontic resin, Transbond XT (3M-Unitek – Br) was used. The teeth chose for testing were 20 pre-molars, which had been prepared through prophylaxis and conditioning of the enamel with 37% orthophosforic acid were divided into 2 groups in accordance with the used luminous source for curing: Group I – light curing through halogenous light for 40 seconds; Group II – light curing using LED per 15 seconds. After 24 hours, the groups were submitted to shear test with speed of 1 mm per minute until the brackets were removed. The results using t student tests demonstrated that there were no statistic differences in the union resistance comparing Group I (14,96MPa ± 5,70) and Group II (13,08MPa ± 4,33). One concluded that, both halogenous light and LED were able to secure reasonable bracket retention to teeth enamel. UNITERMS: bracket bonding; human tooth enamel; LED; halogenous light
