ABSTRACT

What is left from a book: memory, remains and identity
This article tells about reading, the reader’s position before the text andthe educative work of content transmission. In the classic hermeneutic view, reading is aprocess involving dialog, comprehension, integration and identity formation. Based onthis idea and among others, suggestions from Marcel Proust and Paul Celan, this articleargues that the reader’s experience is properly of exclusion in relation to the book. Hisposition is the one of a remainder from the reading, converted into witness and, at thesame time, a vehicle for transmission: not for the book content, its interpretation, or notonly, but as a witness of the presence of the book to be read. This way, the reader’sidentity arises from his reading and comprehension experience, but his subjectivity isformed out of the book, in the process of transmission to the others and therefore textmemorization.
Key words – Reading; transmission; identity.
