The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between diabetic status and periodontal conditions, through the clinical analysis of the degree of the protection tissue and dental sustentation. The sample consisted of 71 patient, both genders and aged 31 to 90 years, carriers of Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 attended in the Endocrinology Service of the Lauro Wanderley University Hospital from the Federal University of Paraiba (UH-FUPB) – João Pessoa/PB. Edentulism was the exclusion criteria for the sample. The Community Periodontal Index (with total analysis of the present dental elements in the oral cavity) and Periodontal Attachment Loss Index were determined using the periodontal conditions. The diagnosis of diabetes mellitus was based on fasting blood sugar and blood sugar 2 hours after 75 mg of glucose overload. Statistical analysis was conducted using the program SPSS v. 11.5. Regarding periodontal conditions was observed 57,8% of individuals showed bleeding on probing, 71,8% calculus, 3,63% pockets of 4-5 mm deep, and 0,28% pockets deeper than 6 mm. The percentage of subjects with an attachment loss up to 6 mm or more was showed in 3,0%. The association between diabetes mellitus and periodontal condition showed no statistical significant association, although individuals with diabetes have larger susceptibility to develop deeper pockets. So, the conclusion is that epidemiological studies relating oral health and systemic disease, such as diabetes mellitus, can provide important contributions for preventing the worsening of such diseases.UNITERMS: periodontal diseases; epidemiology of Diabetes Mellitus type 2; periodontal index.
