EcologyAbstract
The present study describes the feeding habits of populations of Heterocheirodon yatai from the arroio do Salso and the rio Ibicuí da Faxina, both bodies of water of the rio Uruguai system, within the municipalities of Rosário do Sul and Santana do Livramento, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. For the study, monthly collections were made between April 2001 and April 2002. Stomach content analyses were carried out using the methods of frequency of occurrence, percentage composition, and index of food importance. The results show that H. yatai has an omnivorous diet consisting mainly of small crustaceans, aquatic insect larvae, surface plant material and algae. This diet can occasionally be supplemented with other items having lower frequencies and/or abundances. Some differences in diet were found between the populations of the rio Ibicuí and that of the arroio do Salso that may be related to the differences in food availability in the two environments. In any case, the diet of H. yatai is very similar to that of other species in the subfamily Cheirodontinae for which data are available.
