The professional activity of the Brazilian aviation pilots have undergone significant
changes over the past year. The economic crisis that hit the airline industry caused the closing of
traditional companies in Brazil. The inevitable consequences for those with high level technical
training and extensive experience, were being thrown into the ranks of the unemployed, and thus
obliged to leave in search of new opportunities in Europe, Asia, and especially the Middle East,
booming market economy with high demand for this skilled labor. This communication aims to bring
the discussion of the difficulties experienced by pilots of Varig by the new reality and a feeling of
"loss" caused by the closure of the company. It seeks, through the methodology of oral history,
analyzing the symbolic constructed by individuals involved in the process, "pilots emigrants", as well
as preserving the memory of this group of paintings which belonged to Varig to understand how to
adapt in the face of cultural change when setting a new home abroad.
