Aircraft discrepancy report in civil aviation: a study based on a specialized corpus
ABSTRACT: Aircraft frequently have problems and malfunctions in several of their components and systems. These events, which are not expected to occur when they do, are called discrepancy items. Such occurrences should be reported, and their correspondent solutions should be identified for the continued operation of the aircraft. To this end, it is necessary that a report is made in such a way as to textually and concisely inform both the problem identified by the pilot or mechanic and the action taken by maintenance. Using real examples of maintenance reports and of the application of the corpus linguistics principles, this paper presents the language used for the writing of this genre and aims to find a more appropriate way to make a report. The information that should be present in the reports in order to improve the accuracy of the maintenance processes and to reduce the time and resources they utilize is taken into account.
