Abstract

This article analyzes the account by missionary Thomas Schoenaerts, from the Premonstratensian order, on his stay in Brazil (1901-1904), in Jaguarao, and his work as a teacher. His narrative includes significant facts about the culture, habits, education and transport in the gaucho state. His fascination by fauna, geology and geography enabled him to leave good descriptions of the gaucho region, as well as a critical view of blacks and interracial relations in the region in the early 20th century.

Graduada em História pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (1975), mestrado em História pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (1985) e doutorado em Sociologia pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (1999). Atualmente é professora associada da Universidade Federal de Pelotas.

Lorena Almeida Gill, UFPel

Graduada em História (UFPel), Mestre e Doutora em História (PUCRS) e Pós-Doutora pela Università Degli Studi di Siena, Itália. Desde 1992 é professora da Universidade Federal de Pelotas, junto ao Departamento de História e Antropologia.
