Abstract

Many efforts has been made to understand the biology of seahorses; however, most species are listed as “data deficient” at the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature) and as overexploited species in Brazil. Through laboratory studies, sexual behaviors were observed, from monogamy with characteristic demonstrations of nuptial dance and copulation to polygamy and intra-sexual interactions with copulation. It was also reported the development of a structure in adult females that is similar to the male’s brood pouch. The possibility of a hermaphroditic past of seahorses has been discussed.
