Affordances of Edmodo for the flipping and expansion of the L2 classroom

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the affordances of Edmodo (https://www.edmodo.com), the leading k-12 Social Learning Network (Edmodo, 2018), for the flipping and expansion of foreign, second or additional language (L2 henceforth) classroom. To do so, we first had a brief review of literature on blended learning and selected one of its sub-models suggested by Horn and Staker (2014) – the flipped classroom – to focus on. Then, we considered ten out of the fifteen reasons Bergmann and Sams (2012) shared on why teachers should flip their classrooms and described Edmodo’s main features. Finally, we developed Bergmann and Sams’s ten reasons into four practical reasons on why teachers should consider flipping and expanding their classrooms with Edmodo and spoke about our experiences on this platform. This study showed that the various features of this free platform make it an excellent tool for such purposes and we recommend that teachers take advantage of it and adapt it to their contexts.

Mestranda em Linguística (Aplicada) na Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo. Pós-graduanda (Lato sensu) em Ensino de Língua Inglesa pela Estácio de Sá. Conquistou uma das vinte bolsas FLTA da Fulbright ofertadas em 2017 e, de agosto de 2018 a maio de 2019, será professora do curso de português como língua estrangeira na University of Connecticut, onde contribuirá na reinauguração do curso que foi fechado há mais de vinte anos e, além disso, também, será aluna do mestrado para obtenção de créditos.  Possui graduação em Letras Português, Inglês e Respectivas Literaturas pela Faculdade Castelo Branco (Colatina, ES), tendo recebido honra ao mérito como aluna destaque do curso. Estudou inglês (CAE e TOEFL) na International Language Academy of Canada (Toronto, ON) - dezembro de 2014 a janeiro de 2015. Atualmente, é professora de Língua Inglesa no curso de Letras Português, Inglês e Respectivas Literaturas na Faculdade Castelo Branco (Colatina, ES). Conquistou, em 2011, a única bolsa ofertada aos alunos do Centro Estadual de Idiomas de Colatina para estudar um semestre de ensino médio no Canadá (Winnipeg, MB) - graduou no Brasil e, também, no Canadá. De 2013 a 2017, foi professora de inglês na escola Number One Inglês Completo (Colatina, ES).
