Registration and login are required to submit items online and to check the status of current submissions.

 

Author Guidelines

BELT - Brazilian English Language Teaching Journal - accepts papers, interviews, book reviews and activities. Authors need to register (GO TO REGISTRATION) before submitting a paper, an interview, a book review, or an activity. In case the author is already registered it is necessary to log in (GO TO LOGIN) and begin the submission process. Guidelines for publishing papers are presented in the following sections:

 

 

ARTICLE PUBLICATION NORMS

 

  • Number of pages: eight to fifteen.
  • Format: A4 page size; Word for Windows 98 or higher; Times New Roman, size 11; 1.5 spacing.
  • First page must include: the title centralized and in bold (only first letter capitalized), in English and in Portuguese.
  • Skip one line after the title and add the word Resumo, in italics and bold, followed by the article's abstract in italicized Portuguese, with a maximum of 10 lines, without paragraph indentation.
  • On the next line, underneath the Resumo,add Palavras-chave in italics and bold, followed by a maximum of five terms in italics.
  • Below the Palavras-chave, separated by a blank line, add the word Abstract, in italics and bold, followed by the abstract in English.
  • On the next line, after the abstract in English, add the word Keywords, in italics and bold,followed by the key words in English.
  • The main text must begin after a blank line below the Keywords. All sections of the article should be numbered and have bold titles and have one blank line separating them from the previous and following paragraphs.
  • The title for References must be in bold, but not numbered. It should only include works cited in the main body of the article and it has to follow the ABNT-NBR 6023/2002 norms.
  • Paragraphs must have 1 cm indentations in the first line.
  • For quotations with less than three lines, the following model should be followed:

According to Fulano (1009:98), "Xxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxx xxxxxxxx xxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxx xx xxxxxxxx xxxx  xxx xx  xxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxx xxxxx xxx   xxxxxxxxx xx xx xxxxxx xx x x xxx".

The text should be in quotation marks and should not be in bold or italics.

  • Quotations over three lines must be presented in a separated paragraph, with a 2 cm indentation, font size 10 and one blank line separating from from the previous and following paragraphs.
  • Use bold only for the titles and subtitles in the article. If something needs to be highlighted, use only italics. Do not use bold or upper case (capitalized) for highlighting. And do not highlight anything in color.
  • Do not make references to the pages of the article.
  • Avoid the use of the words "below", "above", "next" to make references to figures, graphs, tables or charts; number them and use the number to make references.
  • Footnotes are used only to explain something, not to state references. References should appear in the text in parentheses (brackets), using the surname of the author followed by the year of publication and, in case of citation, the page it was taken from.
  • Attachments: maximum of two attachments per article.

 

 Reference Model:

 

  • The font for references must be Times New Roman, size 11, and specify only works cited in the article.
  • They should follow the ABNT norms of the year 2002. Authors' names mentioned between parentheses must be presented in lowercase - e.g., (Almeida Filho, 2003) in the body of the text.
  • The references must be presented as follows:

GUIDELINES FOR PUBLICATION OF TEACHING ACTIVITIES

  • Number of pages: three to seven.
  • Format: A4 page size; Word for Windows 98 or higher; Times New Roman, size 11; 1.5 spacing.
  • First page must include: the title centralized and in bold (only first letter capitalized), in English and in Portuguese.
  • The text must begin after a blank line below the title. All the items of the activity should be numbered and have bold titles with one blank line separating them from the previous and following paragraphs.
  • Description of target audience and teaching situation.
  • Description of general and specific objectives.
  • Suggestions for development of the activity (time sequence).
  • The activity itself.
  • The title for References must be in bold, but not numbered. It should only include works cited in the article text body and it has to follow the ABNT-NBR 6023/2002 norms.
  • Paragraphs must have a 1 cm indentation in the first line.

GUIDELINES FOR THE PUBLICATION OF INTERVIEWS

  • Interviews should be in a "question-response" (ping pong) format.
  • Number of pages: three to five.
  • Format: A4 page size; Word for Windows 98 or higher; Times New Roman, size 11; 1.5 spacing.
  • First page must include: the title centralized and in bold (only first letter capitalized), in English and in Portuguese.
  • Basic information about interviewee should be presented, including their education, title, place of work, published books and contribution to the area. A digital photo of the interviewee is also required. If possible, a digital audio file of the interview should also be included.

 

GUIDELINES FOR THE PUBLICATION OF BOOK REVIEWS

  • The books to be reviewed should be of general interest to English teachers. The topics of the books being discussed should cover issues concerning Second Language Acquisition, Foreign Language Teaching, teacher development, course books and all related areas.
  • Number of pages: maximum four pages.
